Amazon Just Gave AI Agents a Crypto Wallet. The First Customers Are Already Live.

AWS built payment rails for bots with Coinbase and Stripe. The system settles in 200 milliseconds on Base using USDC. Warner Bros. Discovery is already testing it.

Amazon Web Services launched Bedrock AgentCore Payments on May 7, a system that lets AI agents autonomously pay for APIs, data feeds, and web content using USDC. Coinbase built the wallet infrastructure. Stripeโ€™s Privy provides the fiat onramp. The x402 protocol handles the actual payments. Settlement: 200 milliseconds on Base, less than a fraction of a cent per transaction.

This is the first time a major cloud provider has embedded crypto micropayments directly into enterprise AI infrastructure. The bots do not need human approval for each transaction. They discover paid services, check the price, pay, and move on. All inside a single execution loop.

How the system actually works

An AI agent on AWS Bedrock hits an API endpoint. The server responds with HTTP 402: Payment Required. The agent checks its wallet, verifies the price is within its spending limits, pays in USDC, and receives the data. No human in the loop. The whole cycle takes about 200 milliseconds.

Developers connect their agents to either a Coinbase or Stripe Privy wallet, funded by stablecoins or fiat via debit card. Spending limits are enforced per session. The agent never has open-ended access to funds. Users must explicitly authorize wallet access before the agent can spend anything.

The first version covers micropayments: APIs, MCP servers, paywalled content, data feeds. AWS said future versions will expand to hotel bookings, travel reservations, and merchant payments. That is where this goes from a developer tool to a consumer product.

169 million payments already processed through x402

Coinbaseโ€™s x402 protocol is not new. It launched in May 2025 as an open standard for machine-to-machine payments over HTTP. Since then it has processed over 169 million transactions across 590,000 buyers and 100,000 sellers. What changed is distribution. Now every developer building on AWS Bedrock can plug into x402 without writing custom payment code.

Coinbase and AWS are both members of the x402 Foundation, which governs the protocol as an open standard. Brian Foster, Coinbaseโ€™s head of infrastructure growth, framed the stakes: โ€œThere will soon be more AI agents transacting than humans, and they need money thatโ€™s built for the internet.โ€ That is the pitch. Stablecoins are faster, cheaper, and more programmable than credit card rails for transactions that happen millions of times per second between machines.

Stripe brought Privy. That is the quiet move.

Stripe acquired Privy, a crypto wallet company, last year. Now that wallet infrastructure is embedded in AWSโ€™s AI payment system. Stripe is joining AgentCore as a payment connection in preview, with plans to support broader fiat payments beyond micropayments.

The strategic read: AWS is building a hub where both crypto and fiat methods coexist. Enterprises do not have to choose. They can use stablecoins where speed and cost matter most, and fiat where compliance requires it. That mixed model could normalize crypto inside enterprise stacks faster than any standalone crypto product ever could.

This is not the only player moving. Kraken just paid $600 million for stablecoin payment rails in Asia. Solana and Google Cloud launched a competing agentic payment service last week. The race to own the machine payment layer is on, and the stablecoin market just crossed $321 billion to fund it.

The question nobody is asking yet

AWS said AgentCore agents can connect to thousands of x402 services through Coinbase MCP, including Exa, Messari, and Browserbase. Providers like Anthropic are already building AI systems that interact with blockchain infrastructure. Warner Bros. Discovery is in early testing. This is not hypothetical.

But here is the part everyone is skipping. If AI agents start making millions of autonomous transactions per day using USDC, Circleโ€™s stablecoin effectively becomes the default settlement currency for machine commerce. Not because Circle won a marketing campaign. Because it was embedded in the plumbing of the worldโ€™s largest cloud provider. The currency that AI agents use is the currency that wins. That decision was made in a partnership announcement, not a market.
